Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
In a shocking case of car fraud, an online car rental agency duped several owners by selling their vehicles without informing them. The Rajarhat police of Bidhannagar Commissionerate have successfully busted the gang behind the scam and arrested a key accused in the case.
The arrested accused, identified as Surjeet Dutta alias Babai (30), is a resident of Girish Park in Kolkata. He had been living in a rented flat in Newtown, from where the police nabbed him following a late-night raid on Thursday. During interrogation, Surjeet reportedly confessed to orchestrating the fraudulent activities.
According to police officials, the scam involved renting cars on a contract basis from owners who believed their vehicles would be used for legitimate purposes. However, instead of renting them out to customers, the accused sold these expensive cars without the owners' knowledge, pocketing huge amounts of money.
Several car owners who fell prey to the fraud lodged complaints with Rajarhat police, prompting an investigation. Through technical surveillance and ground intelligence, investigators zeroed in on Surjeet and uncovered the operational method used to cheat unsuspecting vehicle owners.
Authorities suspect that more individuals could be involved in the racket, and further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses. Police are now tracking the buyers of the sold vehicles to recover the stolen assets and identify any broader network linked to the fraud.
The Bidhannagar Commissionerate has urged citizens to be cautious while entering into contracts with online rental agencies and verify the authenticity of service providers thoroughly before handing over their vehicles.
